Lost, 2009
I was excited to find these shiny black aluminum letters. They have a strong silent presence. I then designed a piece around them to accent their ominous message. I contrasted the shiny texture with an extremely flat black tempera paint. I have seen this super flat paint technique on a blue canvas in the San Francisco Museum of Art. The result was better than I expected. As you walk around the room watching this piece, it changes from being almost entirely black to the letters apearing white as they reflect the rooms lights. You can even catch the letters disappearing and only the shadows can be seen allowing you to still read the message. The letters themselves are lost, then found and then only inferred. In many ways, life and its meaning goes through these stages as well.
